The Silver Eagle Coin
The History of the American Silver Eagle.
The first one ounce America Silver Eagle was issued in 1986 by the United States Mint, all Silver Eagles have a $1.00 face value to them and have a silver purity of .999, and each coin weighs 31.101 grams or one ounce and is 40.6mm in diameter. The coin generally features Heraldic Eagle on the reverse of the coin designed by John Mercant, and the obverse bears the image of Liberty Walking a design that was used between 1916 through to 1947 on the 50 cent piece and design by Adolph A. Weinman. From 1986-1992 proof Eagles where minted at the San Francisco Mint and have the S mint mark, from 1993 through 2000 proof Eagles where minted at the Philadelphia Mint and have the P mint mark, Since 2001 proof Eagle have been minted at the West Point Mint and display the W mint mark. The obverse is inscribed with the year of the coins minting, the word LIBERTY, and the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST.

Silver Eagle Proof
Proof Silver Eagle coin in display case. For the first time in the US Mints run of the Proof Silver Eagle a 2009 Silver Proof was not produced. Proof Eagle are sold in a velvet case with outer box and certificate of authenticity.

Slabbed Silver Eagles
Silver Proof and uncirculated Eagles can also come as slabbed coins, slabbed Eagles are graded coins placed inside a plastic container slab to protect the graded coin. Proof Silver Eagles recieve a PR grade whilst mint state coins recieve a MS grade. There are a number of coin grading services who grade and slab bullion these are PCGS and NGC.
Proof Silver Eagle
The Silver Eagle is also offered in a proof bullion version of the coin, the Silver Eagle has been minted at three mints over the years, the Philadelphia, San Francisco and West Point Mints. In 2009 no Silver Proof Eagles where produced when the US Mint cancelled the production of them, the first time this has happened in its production run. Proof Eagle are sold in a velvet case with outer box and certificate of authenticity.
